[Bookplate for Denis Le Marchant] In black ink. No Escutcheon. Ducal coronet, on top of which is an upside down cock leg. 22. [Bookplate for George Wilbraham] In black ink. Escutcheon parted per pale, the sinister half azure, a bend, argent, engrailed, two bendlets, or, on either side. The dexter half parted per cross. The first and fourth quarters, argent, bendy of seven, argent and azure. The second and third quarters, barry of five, argent and azure, a canton, sable, with a wolf. Above the escutcheon is a straight crest wreath topped with a wolf. Below the escutcheon is a banner containing the Latin motto. 23. [Bookplate for Benjamin Gott] In black ink. Escutcheon inside a garter on which is the Latin motto. Inescutcheon parted per bend, argent [white], charged with two roses on either side of a lion, passant ; coticed, argent, and charged with three tufts of ermine each, sable [black].Two layer bordure, countercharged, argent and sable. Above the escutcheon is a curved crest wreath on which is a demi-gryphon, displayed. 24. [Bookplate for John Eardley Wilmot] In black ink. A marshalling of 12, this bookplate incorporates several notable charges, including two sets of eagle heads, erased, a leg erased, three garbes, a stag salient with hounds in pursuit, a scythe, three bugle-horns, three maiden's busts, three crosses-crosslet, three mullets and a lion rampant. The escutcheon is surrounded by an ornate, foliage border in the Chippendale style. It is crowned with a peer helmet, set upon a vegetative backdrop. The mantling supports two straight wreathes, charged with a demi-eagle, holding an escalop in its beak (dexter) and a stag courant (sinister). Among the many heraldic armorials depicted, this bookplate includes several identifiable familial crests. The originator's descendants, include, from dexter chief to sinister base, the Wilmot family in armorial one, the Eardley family in armorial three and the Marrow family in armorial seven. The Wilmot family armorial displays a sable (black) background parted per fess, or (gold), with three escalops on the fess, situated between three eagle heads, erased, two over one. The Eardley family armorial is argent (silver), with a chevron, azure (blue), charged with three garbes (sheaves of corn) and in canton gules (red) a fret, or. The Marrow family armorial is azure, parted per fess, or, engrailed, situated between three maiden's busts, two over one. 25. [Bookplate for Rob. S. Atcheson] In black ink, this bookplate contains a rooster atop a horn, which is itself atop a straight wreath. The rooster is a common heraldic symbol that stands for vigilence. Above the rooster is a banner containing the latin motto. 26. [Bookplate for Hugh Lyle Smyth] In black ink, this bookplate consists of an escutcheon, argent (silver), containing an invected bend, azure (blue). The escutcheon is charged with two unicorn heads, gules (red) and erased, at dexter base and sinister chief ; the bend is charged with three lozenges, ermine (white powdered fur with black tufts). Above the escutcheon is a dexter closed helmet, which is topped by a ducal coronet and a unicorn head, gules and erased, with lozenge, ermine. From either side of the helmet flows elaborate mantling. Below the escutcheon is a banner containing the Latin motto. 27. [Bookplate for Francois-Xavier Bosse Mgr.] In black ink, a decorative border surrounding the text. 28. [Bookseller's Ticket for R. & C. Chalmers] In black ink on yellow paper, the bookseller's ticket consists of a decorative border surrounding black text. 29. [Bookplate for Marcus Brown Westhead] In black ink on white paper, this bookplate consists of a shield quartered. First and fourth quarter, argent, two barrulets dancette sable, between three Saracens' heads couped at the shoulders proper, wreathed round the temples, of the first and second. Second and third quarter, azure, on a fesse argent, between three martlets in chief, and the Roman fasces erect surmounting two swords in saltire, and encircled by a chaplet in base or, three chess-rooks sable. Center inescutcheon, party per chevron or and azure, in chief a mullet of six points lies between two crosses pattée of the last, and in base the front elevation of a chapel argent, the whole being charged with a crescent for difference. First crest, on a wreath of the colors, within a fetterlock or, a Saracen's head couped proper, wreathed round the temples argent and sable. Second crest, on a wreath of the colours, a demi-eagle displayed with two heads azure, charged on the breast with the fasces, swords, and chaplet, as in the arms. The escutcheon is surrounded by mantling and below a banner bears the motto 'ORA ET LABORA.'. 30. [Bookplate for John Caton Thompson] In black ink on white paper, this bookplate consists of a shield parted per pale, baron and femme, three coats ; first, or, a bordure, argent, a lion rampant ; second, parted per fess, sable, on a chevron argent, between three swans' heads, two over one, erased at the neck, ducally gorged, three pellet one over two ; in base (same as second) sable, on a chevron argent, between three swans' heads, two over one, erased at the neck, ducally gorged, three pellet one over two. Above a straight wreath, the crest of a lion rampant, ducally gorged. Below the shield, laurel sprigs. At the bottom of the ex libris appears the name 'John Caton Thompson.'. 31. [Bookplate for Arthur Richard Springett] In black ink on white paper, this bookplate consists of a shield or escutcheon Gules (red) party per fess wavy with three crescents, two over one, Argent (silver). The closed, barred helm in profile toward the dexter half bears a crest of a displayed eagle upon a nowed snake in a figure eight and a straight wreath. The helm is surrounded by mantling. Below the escutcheon, a banner bears the motto 'MEMOR ET FIDELIS' [Latin: Mindful and Faithful]. 32. [Bookplate for Gerald Lynham Porte Grant-Suttie] In black ink on white paper, this bookplate consists of a shield Azure (blue), three eagles displayed two over one, a chief, Or (gold), a demi-lion rampant queue fourche. Issuing out of a Crown Vallary, the crest of a demi-lion rampant queue fourche and holding in the forepaws a star of seven points. Below the escutcheon, a banner bears the motto 'VINCIT QUI POSSE CREDIT' [Latin = He who believes that he can, succeeds]. 33. [Bookseller's Ticket for James Bain] In black ink on white paper, the bookseller's ticket consists of a serpentine black border with decorative elements in the four corners surrounding black text in roman and italic type. 34. [Bookplate for Collège de Saint-Laurent] In black ink on white paper, at the top of this bookplate one finds a banner bearing the text “BIBLIOTHÈQUE DU COLLÈGE DE SAINT-LAURENT” [French: Library of Saint-Laurent College], below which sits the coat of arms of Quebec. The coat of arms consists of a shield or escutcheon Or (gold) on a fess Gules (red) between two fleurs de lis in chief Azure (blue), and a sprig of three leaves of maple slipped Vert (green) in base, a lion passant guardant Or (gold). A banner below the escutcheon bears the motto “JE ME SOUVIENS” [French: I Remember]. On either side of the coat of arms of Quebec are shining five-point stars. Below the coat of arms of Quebec on the left is the coat of arms of the Congregation of the Holy Cross. The coat of arms consists of a shield or escutcheon Azure (blue), charged with a Latin cross, Or (gold), surmounted by two anchors, saltier, Argent (silver). A banner below the escutcheon bears the motto “SPES UNICA” [Latin: Our Only Hope]. To the right of the coat of arms of the Congregation of the Holy Cross appear the words “EX LIBRIS.” Further to the right is a third coat of arms, likely the coat of arms of the Collège de Saint-Laurent. The coat of arms consists of a shield or escutcheon party per fess, first party per pale Azure (blue), charged with a Latin cross, Or (gold), surmounted by two anchors, saltier, Argent (silver) ; Gules (red), charged with a feather quill, Argent (silver) ; second Azure (blue), a pale Or (gold). A banner dividing the shield per fess bares the acronym “C. S. L.” A banner below the escutcheon bears the motto of the Collège de Saint-Laurent: “PALMA DE CRUCE” [Latin: Victory by the Cross]. Below the three coats of arms appears a beaver facing left below which rests two crossed branches of sugar maple tied with a ribbon. At the bottom of the bookplate appear the words “MONTRÉAL, CANADA.”. 35. [Bookplate for Ian Waldie by Alexander Scott Carter] In black ink on white paper, a sailboat at sea with a fish depicted in the waves below. Three seagulls are flying around the boat. A wide, bold floral border surrounds the image of the ship, with a few books and a lyre above it. 36. [Bookplate for Edmund Murton Walker by Thoreau MacDonald] In black ink on white paper, a dragonfly is flying past some large rocks next to a body of water, likely a river. In the background is a forest of tall evergreen trees. 37. [Bookplate for Collège de Saint-Laurent] In black ink on white paper with a border composed of white/hollow diamonds surrounded by filled/black diamonds at each point. Inside the border appear the words “BIBLIOTHÈQUE / DU / Collège Saint-Laurent / No…..,” indicating a space for a number. The number “8” is written in pencil in this space. 38. [Bookplate for William Brophy] In black ink on white or cream paper, the bookplate consists of an architectural, Egyptian-themed border with lotus flowers all around, a Sphinx in the lower right, and Egyptian wall art in the lower left. Below the school name and above the location is a monogram made of the letters CSV. Five fonts used for the text, with spaces for hand-written annotations naming the prize recipient. 39. [Bookplate for C. J. S. Bacon] In black ink on white or cream paper, the bookplate consists of a decorative border surrounding black text. 40. [Bookplate for Karl Hermann and Michael B. Kunze] In black ink on white coated paper, an image of a farmer's field. A farmer strolls away from the observer spreading seed from a side-bag. In the distance is what appears to be a town and a church steeple which is framed by radiating sunlight. In the sky above is a bird, possibly a dove. To the right of the field is a road lined with narrow trees and farmhouse situated at the base of a hill, on which possibly sits a castle. In the foreground is a piece of farming equipment and foliage frames the german expression "Und Erliches fiel aut ein gutes Land".
